Flexion of the haunches

When talking about the haunches, we are referring to the joints of the back quarters which should flex during the load bearing in collection. Only a straightened horse, which has understood the correction of the diagonal, is able to have an upward swinging back and to bend its haunches so the joints are relieved. To keep a horse healthy, the flexion of the haunches is by all means to be strived for.

If the horse is supposed to carry the human, it needs to be active in the hindquarters. It needs to be able to bend its haunches. Flexion of the haunches is the true engagement of the hindquarters. What in the earlier days used to be done by the work on the pillars, still nowadays, with modern horse, needs to be the goal of every basic schooling.
