Shoulder (control)

The shoulder is of vital importance in the schooling of the riding horse. Only the lifting of the forelegs by the trapezius muscle enables the diagonal shift and with that the stepping under of the hind quarters.

By lifting the right shoulder (and therewith preventing the right-handed horse to lean on the right foreleg) the weight is shifted diagonally onto the outer leg (supporting leg). As a consequence the horse approaches the outside guarding leg. Now the inner hind leg (free leg) can move into the centre of gravity without a problem.
