Fascia Research: What has been the most natural thing to do at the ARR Center ever since, can finally be made visible.

Hans Spirig, saddler in the fourth generation from St Gallen in Switzerland and manufacturer of the school and show saddles of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, has been a close friend of the Schoeneich family during his lifetime. His incredulous remark to comment on the physical change that the horses undergo at the ARR Center is unforgettable: «You transform every mare into a stallion!»

He simply couldn’t understand how horses’ muscles can change so radically in only five weeks of longing work that his tailor-made saddles did not fit anymore. The thorough and passionate craftsman he was, he wanted to solve this mystery. Therefore, he went to a butcher’s and flayed horses that had been killed because of unexplained lameness, so he could see the tissue underneath the saddle position. It was striking that the whole trapezius area was grey and degenerated.

What Hans Spirig has observed with dead animals has always been a core element of training at the ARR Center, and thanks to state of the art technology it can now be made visible also with living beings: fascia – the connective tissue that wraps muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments which in the past has been underrated in classic medicine.

When exposed to improper or too little exercising as well as with stress, this complex structures dry out and lose resilience. In this condition, the fascia cannot fulfil its multiple tasks anymore: the body position becomes less stable, the body consciousness lessens, muscles atrophy, pain is the consequence.

But fascia can regenerate and renew themselves! This is exactly what happens during the training at the ARR Center. With the stretching and strengthening work the fascia becomes resilient and can fully fulfil its functions again: the metabolism is stimulated, muscles are rapidly built up, the horse finds its balance and a clearly enhanced wellbeing.

The most recent findings in fascia research in the area of human medicine are summarized in this very interesting TV documentary. The analogy to horses seems obvious and brings up fascinating explanations on how and why ARR works.
